Today, Monday, the Appeals Council decides on the appeal of OSE inspector Dimitris Nikolaou, who requests his release from prison.

However, the head of the Larissa Appellate Prosecutor’s Office Stamatis Daskalopoulos with a 35-page report, it opposes the release of Nikolaos.

It is noted that by the beginning of May at the latest, it is expected to be submitted to the appellant-investigator Sotiris Bakaimis, the report on the tragedy by the two experts he has appointed.

The opinion of the two experts appointed after a prosecutor’s order is expected to answer both the issues of the safety systems and the disputed question if they existed and were working, whether they would have prevented the fatal collision. An answer that will determine whether the judicial investigation will be expanded and whether new prosecutions will be brought in addition to those already known against the station masters, as well as the remanded 59-year-old station master and the 62-year-old inspector.

As part of the investigation, current and former station masters, train supervisors, and special train drivers were called and testified last week before Mr. Bakaimis, with the statements of some more witnesses to be determined for the coming week.

With these deposits the first cycle closes of the interrogation to be followed by the examination of documents and, of course, the delivery of the report (by the end of the month) of the experts of the Traffic Department.

In order to avoid the collision, the importance of the operation of systems for the safety of rail transport is also referred to the conclusion of the Committee of Experts established by government decision, a conclusion that was already forwarded to Mr. Bakaimis to Mr. Daskalopoulos.
