Firefighters remain on alert as such buildings, due to age and frailty, face the risk of collapse
The collapse of part of the roof of the abandoned building engulfed in flames was the result of the fire that occurred today, at 06:40, at the junction of Aiolos and Agia Irini streets, in the center of Athens, and is now under partial control.
As reported by the press representative of the Fire Department, Yiannis Artopioos, due to the fragility and age of the building, the roof of the abandoned building immediately caught fire as it rested on wooden beams and burned, causing it to collapse.
At the same time, due to the thermal load that developed, the flames spread – to a small extent – to the roof of a Mexican restaurant that was located next door, however, as it became known from the Fire Department, the damage caused was “imperceptible”.
“The building of the restaurant was bordering, the business has no problem, it is functional”, said Mr. Artophios to APE-BPE. It is also noted that no one was in danger from the fire due to the immediate intervention of the Fire Department.
The fire brigades, however, remain on the lookout, as, as Mr. Patophios points out, such buildings, due to their age and fragility, face the risk of collapse when they catch fire.
