The preliminary investigation has been completed, it is being considered whether prosecution will be brought against the grandfather
Doubts on the causes that caused the cardiac arrest, the medical examiner expresses in the final expert report, on the death of the 14-year-old girl, who breathed her last on June 30, 2022, while being hospitalized at Hippocrate in Thessaloniki, six months after suffering an electric shock while taking a bath at home her grandfather in the Roma settlement of Aliveri, in N. Ionia.
The medical examiner’s report, together with the electrical report, are included in the case file of the completed preliminary examination and handed over to the prosecutor, which will consider whether to prosecute the minor’s 45-year-old grandfather for fatally endangering his granddaughter and endangering his wife and two other grandchildren due to the dangerous condition of the house’s non-existent electrical installation.
According to cross-referenced information, preliminary which had been ordered by the public prosecutor was completed and when asked by the medical examiner if someone can suffer an electric shock without the signs of the electric current exiting the body being visible, the answer was that it is possible, as the body is a conduit for the electric current to pass .
As can be seen from the expert opinion and from the evidence in the case file, the girl was barefoot in the bathroomo, the water was running from the shower and she got electrocuted. The minor fell and hit her head in a place that was built to separate the shower from the rest of the bathroom.
From the forensic examination, it emerged that 14-year-old Eleni had pneumonia, not a severe one.
However, since a forensic examination was not carried out when the minor was taken to the Volos Hospital, the medical examiner cannot determine the causes from which it came the minor’s death from cardiac arrest, six months after the incident.
Extremely dangerous situation at home
According to the expert opinion of electricians in the ground-floor detached house of the minor’s grandfather, where the accident took place, the situation is extremely dangerous, as there is not even an electrical installation and there was a risk of electric shock not only for the minor, but also for the other family members.
A DEDDIE team that went to the house after the minor’s death, found that electricity was being stolen to electrify the house.
For electricity, there was a bare cable from the PPC pole in the yard, to get to the house it passed through the bathroom and the house was a non-electrified property, without a PPC clock.
The expert report shows that the cable that supplied electricity to the house did not have an earth, which had been removed, the appliances in the house were receiving power from a power strip, while at the time of the expert report, the washing machine was out of order due to a short circuit.
As follows the house was extremely dangerous and danger to man could arise at any hour and moment.
The material of the case file is in the hands of the public prosecutor and there is a consideration of requesting additional testimony from the 45-year-old owner of the house without trial, in the context of the investigation of prosecution for fatal exposure to danger not only of the 14-year-old, but also of the other family members.
It is noted that after the death of the 14-year-old six months after her injury, the case file was reopened and in addition to the circumstances under which the minor was injured, her clinical picture and condition are also being investigated.
No breathing and no pulse
According to the certificate of the doctors of the Volos Hospital, the minor was taken to the Hospital by I.X. car on January 4, 2022, at 3:45 a.m. and her relatives (her mother and grandfather) stated that they found her slumped in the shower of her home, she was soaked, and when they tried to pick her up, they were electrocuted.
The minor was allegedly bruised from a cardiac arrest, when she arrived at the hospital she was not breathing and had no pulse, while she was bruised due to a cardiac arrest she suffered. During the CPR the girl suffered a seizure, the doctors immediately intubated her and she was transferred to the Hippocrates Hospital of Thessaloniki.
In the report of the Hospital doctors, there is no mention of other marks (scratches or bruises) on the face and neck, nor of a blow to the head, which the relatives claim was caused by the girl’s fall in the shower.
Her mother and grandfather, initially told the Hospital and then in the statements they gave to the Police, that while she was at home they heard a loud bang from the bathroom, entered and saw the minor had fallen into the shower and when they tried to when they picked her up, they were “struck” by the current, while they had established that she had a skull fracture.
The exposition of Hippocrates
As part of the preliminary investigation, a certificate was requested from the Hippocrates Hospital of Thessaloniki regarding the state of the 14-year-old’s health, which was signed on May 4, a period when the minor was still hospitalized and arrived at the Prosecutor’s Office in June.
As reported at the time, the minor was hospitalized intubated and under sedation, following an injury in the bathtub, as reported by her relatives.
Doctors had diagnosed extensive edema (swelling) in the area of the brain, possibly due to a vascular agent caused by the arrest, days after the bleeding stopped and he underwent a CT scan.
Also in the report it was stated that no point of entry and exit of electric current was found in the body and from the medical actions performed no special findings were found in the brain, apart from swelling.
