The completion of the “Western Corridor” for the transmission of electricity in the Peloponnese will be announced in the next period by ADMIE, as the work on the installation of the last remaining pillars for the project to be operational has been completed.

It is about the interconnection of the Megalopolis Ultra High Voltage Center with the existing 400 kV Achelou-Distomo Transmission Line, which is a critical element for the development of the system and the strengthening of its safe operating conditions, especially in conjunction with the completion of the Eastern Corridor ( Megalopolis – Corinth and Corinth – Koumoundouros).

The completion of the western corridor was delayed for almost 4 years due to local backlash that prevented the installation of the last 2 pylons remaining for its electrification. After appeals and litigation, the route of the project was changed and 7 new pylons were installed to complete the line.

The development of the Transmission System is a key condition for the installation of more renewable energy sources needed to achieve the climate targets set by the EU.

In addition to the western corridor, the second Greece-Bulgaria interconnection (N. Santa – Maritsa East) is expected to be completed in June, which is also a project of European interest as it will increase cross-border trade and the stability of the regional market (Greece is already connected to the Bulgarian system Greece is connected via the 400 kV line Thessaloniki – Blagoevgrad).

As the President and CEO of ADMIE Manos Manousakis pointed out, during the presentation of the latest ten-year development program 2024-2033 “The electrical interconnections of Greece with Italy and Albania, as well as the new projects to upgrade the domestic electrical system, will significantly support the penetration of green energy at national and regional level and will promote the European goals to achieve climate neutrality”.

In order to prevent stability risks in the system from the high participation of RES without storage in the system, ADMIE has proposed the mandatory addition of energy storage units to all new RES in the future and also the granting of financial incentives to those investments that are in the implementation phase in order to also to be flanked by batteries.
