During yesterday’s meeting, the Board of Directors her ESIEA it was unanimously decided to revalidate journalist Julian Assange, imprisoned by the British authorities, as an honorary member and to issue him with an honorary ESIEA journalistic identity card.

In this way ESIEA participates in the campaign in support of Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, organized by the Italian Federation of Journalists (FNSI) with the support of the European and International Federation of Journalists (EFJ/IFJ).

The idea is for as many European journalists’ unions and associations as possible to grant an honorary journalistic identity to Julian Assange, so that at the support event organized by the Italian Federation of Journalists today 27/4 in Rome, the following joint statement will be promoted:

“Free him Julian Assangehonorary member of our associations

We, the undersigned European journalists’ unions and associations, join our voices with the ILO in calling on the US government to drop all charges against Julian Assange and allow him to return home to his wife and children.

We are deeply concerned about the impact of Assange’s continued detention on media freedom and the rights of all journalists worldwide and urge European governments to work actively to secure Julian Assange’s release. To show our solidarity, we are symbolically declaring Julian Assange an honorary member of our associations.”
