by

The rainfall over the weekend in Kalymnos reached 160 mm, stressed to SKAI and Sia Kosioni the professor and president of OASP, Efthymios Lekkas, noting that major interventions are required to reduce the landslide risk on the island.

“The rain that falls in Kalymnos every hour from Friday night until today is terrible,” said Mr. Lekkas.

There was, he explained, a predisposition for landslides or runoff throughout Kalymnos, but the trigger for this whole process of manifestation was the heavy rainfall, it reached 160 mm during the weekend, a huge rain, with terrible speed, and selection of certain areas that too much water fell.

Mr. Lekkas emphasized the water, it also swept away the ridges (the pieces of rocks) with the result that we have extensive flows of ridges and other soil flows, but also landslides, falls with the phenomena being very intense. The whole geological background is prone to movement.

As the president of OASP pointed out, “something can be done immediately to housing the affected citizens and rehabilitation can be done, the mayor has already launched rehabilitation projects on the road network to restore traffic, but major interventions are needed to reduce what is said landslide hazard.

“There is a small possibility for new landslides, we have already launched for 1.5 years with the mayor research to reduce the phenomena, but it can not be done overnight, it must be done in the long run. “Next week we will present to the municipal council the investigation so that the measures can start immediately”. The restoration of the normal operation and the life in some areas of Kalymnos is important, added Mr. Lekkas.
