“Anapautirion”, an important Athenian landmark, next to the Holy Temple of St. Dimitriou Loumbardiaris on Filopappos Hill, created in the 50s by the leading Greek architect and urban planner Dimitris Pikionis, is granted to the Municipality of Athens by the Public Real Estate Company (ETAD) for the purpose of its protection and restoration.

The emblematic reference point of the capital, which has remained closed for about two decades, was built in the period 1954-1958, in the context of the Acropolis enhancement projects.

The special – due to its location and architectural value – project of Athens together with the cobblestones that unify the Filopappos and Acropolis Hills and the adjacent temple, was declared a monument protected by UNESCO in 1996 and designated by the Ministry of Culture as a “historic preserved monument” and “work of art”.

The space, which for many years was used as a gathering place for the Athenians, had been transferred to EOT, while its management had been taken over by ETAD.

Through the contract that was signed, the Municipality of Athens undertakes from today its restoration, maintenance and protection, with the aim of functioning as a place of recreation and rest for the visitors of Filopappos Hill, as was intended by the architect Pikionis himself.

“Our collaboration with ETAD paves the way for the restoration of this great work of Pikionis, in the “shadow” of the Acropolis. The “Resort” which for many years remains closed and cut off from the life of the city, after the concession agreement with the municipality will be able to reconnect and become a recreation area again. Our aim is to protect this landmark for the capital with respect, as befits its history, so that it regains its lost glory. We want a new generation of Athenians to be able to get to know it, experience it and enjoy it!”, emphasizes the Mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyannis, in his statement.

The agreement with ETAD – What does the Municipality of Athens undertake?

Through the contract, ETAD leases for the next 20 years to the municipality the “Restaurant” (area 1,063 sq.m. with building installation) located within the declared archaeological site of Filopappos. With the care, expense and responsibility of the Municipality of Athens, it is undertaken to obtain all the necessary permits before the start of the works with the aim of restoring the site, concluding – in accordance with the applicable provisions – the relevant assignments for the implementation of the projects.

The restoration of the “Restaurant” on Philopappos Hill is based on the same model of cooperation that is followed for Lycabettus.

As announced a few weeks ago by the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, the historic Theater will be delivered by the end of August and its re-opening after 15 years will be marked with a big Festival in September.
