Three emblematic spots in the old town of Chania can now be used for civil weddings, already attracting the interest of Greeks and foreigners.
As explained to APE-MPE, the president of the Municipal Port Fund, Manolis Kotsifakis, after consultation with the Antiquities Authority, gave the “green” light for the performance of civil weddings in the area of ​​the barge located on the jetty of the old port, in an area east of the Egyptian lighthouse. as well as on the roof of the new building of the port fund of Chania.
“Our goal is to highlight important points of Chania that are located in the old port and to strengthen, along with other actions, the effort to make Chania a destination for wedding tourism”, Mr. Kotsifakis points out to APE-MPE.
The effort to perform civil weddings outside the premises of the town hall also signals the perception that for their important moments, many couples would do well to have alternative solutions.
As the president of the Municipal Port Fund told APE-MBE, the Antiquities Authority had been asked to approve other places for civil weddings, such as some piers, the area in front of the Center for Mediterranean Architecture, the Firka fortress, however the proposal was not passed since the services of the Antiquities Authority decided that due to the high traffic that the specific points have, there were probably problems.
“Based on this data civil weddings will be held on one floor of the Forteza building, on the grand staircase to the east at the “foot”, of the Egyptian lighthouse and on the roof of the new building of the Port Authority of Chania».
According to Mr. Kotsifakis, the newlyweds will have the opportunity to be photographed on the steps of the Egyptian Lighthouse, and at a low point, inside the monument.
In the specific spots chosen for the performance of civil weddings, the use of music will not be allowed.
In particular, the performance of civil weddings on the roof of the new building of the Municipal Port Fund becomes possible as the building is handed over in May. Its roof will be available not only for the performance of civil weddings but also for rent to collective catering companies, or for anyone interested who wants to rent the space for an event. No music will be allowed.
The new building of the Municipal Port Fund
The new building of the Municipal Port Fund is located in the “heart” of the old port of the city. On its ground floor, in the eastern store, a Tourist Contact Service Center (KEET) will operate, in collaboration with the Municipality of Chania, the Deputy Mayor of Tourism, the E.O.T. and the Ministry of Tourism. The aim is for the Center to operate from 10 am to 10 pm.
On the ground floor, it is also proposed to operate a model Aid Station A of the Venetian Port of Chania and shops for rent, for any commercial use, except that of health interest.
The spaces on the first floor will become offices that will house the services of the Municipal Port Fund of Chania.
The spaces on the 2nd floor will become offices for rent for any use.
