He was faced with six felonies and one misdemeanor – Seven years later, he was completely vindicated by the justice system which unanimously acquitted him in the second degree.
In 2016 his life turned upside down in the most nightmarish way. His ex-girlfriend, who was a minor at the time, alleged that he physically and sexually abused her. He had no idea about all this. He couldn’t even suspect that the love affair they had could develop into …hell for both him and his family. One fine morning he was charged with six felonies and one misdemeanor. He could at any moment find himself behind bars. In the small society of his village, he was a target for some. The accusations are heavy, the stigmatization is heavy and unbearable, there is a lot of noise. Security officers had searched his family’s home and the shop he ran at the time. By word of mouth the news spread like wildfire about his involvement in such a heinous affair.
Throughout this ordeal he steadfastly maintained his innocence. His family, on the other hand, was trying to manage the whole situation at a great mental cost: on the one hand, the fragile psyche of their own person and on the other hand, the social environment which, in small societies, unfortunately sometimes turns into a… executioner.
Today, seven years later, L. was completely vindicated by the justice system that acquitted him unanimously and in the second degree. He was acquitted in the first instance by a majority, however, an appeal was filed by the prosecutor and so the case was tried again today before the Mixed Court of Appeal of Eastern Crete.
By his side were his parents, relatives and good friends, who all these years tried to support and encourage him.
This whole terrible legal adventure “braked” his dreams, his plans for tomorrow, he closed himself off. Now, relieved, he will try to … reboot.
“Not even to my worst enemy” you’ll hear him say on Cretalive’s camera shortly after the appellate court’s decision. “I want to change the page in my life.”
“After about seven years, justice has been served” said Mr. Pantelis Ryakiotakis, one of the defense attorneys. The other defense attorney, Mr. Antonis Voulgarakis, stated for his part that the whole case started as a terrible story from the ones that are written on the front pages of the newspapers with very serious accusations, which finally ended up in court.
