The residents of Heraklion were also awake on the streets yesterday, after the intense 5.1 Richter earthquake.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 7 Km. southwest of Miamos Heraklion of Moira Heraklion, while the focal depth was at 8.9 kilometers, with the tremor also being felt in Rethymno and eastern Crete.

The area was boiling all night giving at least 25 aftershocks, with the residents in panic and the fire brigade on foot, in every part of Crete.

Disturbance was caused a little after midnight on Thursday to Friday, in the area of ​​Kaminia, in Heraklion, when – according to the testimonies of neighbors – a concrete part of the roof of a house collapsed, taking a balcony with it.

According to what became known, on the ground floor of the specific building lives a family that was inside the house at that time! By pure luck, as reported, there were no injuries.

The neighborhood “rose” to its feet, as the incident was recorded shortly after the 5.1 Richter earthquake that was also felt in the city of Heraklion.
It should be noted that, according to the neighbors, the same building was also occupied a few years ago, when a balcony of the facade of the 1st floor fell on parked vehicles.

At 4.3 Richter the most powerful aftershock

In the first two hours after the magnitude 5.1 earthquake, around 10 aftershocks were recorded, of which three exceeded magnitude 3 (magnitude 3.5 at 22:55, 3.1 at 23:33 and 3.2 at 23: 51), while by 03:00 on Friday morning the aftershocks had reached 18 with the most powerful magnitude 4.3 occurring at 02:53, according to the revised solution of the Geodynamic Institute centered 6 kilometers north- northeast of the Good Ports of Heraklion.

“Strong earthquake in southern Crete with a magnitude of 5.1 at 21:58. Centered on land 10 km southwest of Moira. A few smaller earthquakes preceded it and yesterday there was a magnitude 4.2 earthquake in the same epicenter. Very careful monitoring and evaluation by scientists and protection measures by local authorities are required, as provided for in the EGLADOS Operational Plan».

So far there are no reports of damage or injuries and according to witnesses, the earthquake was strong, however, it did not last long.
