Our homeless fellow human beings living in conditions of social exclusion, in Piraeus, received the help of the Greek Red Cross, earlier tonight. Blankets, hats, gloves, hot drinks, chocolates, toasts, biscuits and other dry food items, personal hygiene items, basic food items, clothing, as well as personal protective equipment from Covid-19, were some of the items delivered by social workers. and EES volunteers for the homeless in the port of Piraeus.
At the same time, first aid, first aid for mental health, as well as information about the heated areas of the municipality were provided. The four-legged faithful companions of our homeless fellow citizens also benefited from the help of the volunteers, as feed, blankets and warm blankets were distributed to cope with the extremely low temperatures that prevail.
“The action has just been completed in the port of Piraeus and specifically in Gate E8 where a lot of people had gathered and had children of all ages and many children. “There we had two ranks with social workers, social welfare volunteers and Samaritan-Rescue volunteers”, said speaking to APE-MPE Marina Stamati, head of the Samaritan-Rescuers department of the Greek Red Cross.
As Ms. Stamati stated, “all the items offered are always from donations, while at Christmas in collaboration with a private channel we collected a lot of food and distributed it today. The Greek Red Cross relies on its volunteers as its basic principle is volunteering. We have three volunteer bodies, the Health sector, the Social Welfare sector and the Samaritan Rescuers and Lifeguards sector. “Everyone has a specific training, everyone is well trained to provide where they need first aid and willing at any time when something arises to help.”
In her statement to APE-MPE, the head of the Samaritan-Rescuers sector pointed out that “the actions of the Greek Red Cross never stop on cold winter nights but of course in summer respectively when we have very high temperatures. Of course, we should emphasize that the actions do not only concern Attica but we are also talking about Thessaloniki, Patras and in general for all regions of Greece as the Greek Red Cross has 90 regional divisions “. Ms. Stamati even stressed that whoever wants and can help “we want volunteers and those who are interested can visit our website www.redcross.gr and see how they can, either by offering or by becoming volunteers.”
Today’s action of active approach of homeless (streetwork), took place after the order of the president Dr. Antoniou Avgerinou, according to the announcement of the Hellenic Red Cross, in which it is mentioned that in 2021, from the continuous action of the E.E.S. 1,896 homeless people have benefited and 4,500 humanitarian aid packages have been distributed. “Also, during the winter and until the end of April 2022, 35 additional corresponding actions are planned and it is estimated that about 3,500 of our vulnerable fellow human beings will be served”, concludes the announcement of the Greek Red Cross.
