The case of the very brutal robbery against an elderly couple in Fourne, exactly five years ago, on January 16, 2017, was heard yesterday in the five-member criminal court of Western Crete in Chania.
That day, two Albanian citizens, 32 and 36 years old, had robbed an elderly couple in Fourne of the Municipality of Platanias in Chania, leaving them then tied with wire and with the gas supply open.
The case had shocked the nation at the time, due to the “super-grandmother” who, although tied up, managed to open the tablet and notify via skype her niece in Australia, who then called the police.
In the meantime, the perpetrators fled after removing the amount of one thousand two hundred euros, a gold cross, a wedding ring and various documents, while they were located a few days later, ready to travel outside Greece.
At first instance, both were found guilty of robbery with extreme severity, no mitigation was granted and the Court, exhausting the scope of the sentence, imposed them for life despite finding them “innocent” on charges of attempted murder and attempted murder.
The 82-year-old had described what she had experienced then, with complete clarity of mind, with the Court congratulating her on how she managed to escape, while the testimony of the Security officer who handled the case was also shocking, who spoke of a robbery with unprecedented hardness.
The 88-year-old died 20 days later, but the court did not accept that his death was related to the robbery. It also did not turn out that the robbers themselves had turned on the gas supply to cause an explosion, as was announced at the press conference of the police after the investigation of the case.
We remind you that at that time the authorities had reached the traces of the perpetrators using information and as they themselves had fallen into contradictions during the interrogation. One of them worked for years for the elderly woman, who even took care of him, cooked for him and had him under her protection. A piece of cloth like the one used to silence them was found in his house and then they confessed to their act.
However, yesterday’s trial led to the reversal of the case, reducing the sentence to a minimum while it is noted that the 82-year-old has also died.
