In Shanghai the hottest day for the month of May in 100 years was recorded today, the weather service of this eastern Chinese city announced.

“At 13:09 (local time 08:09 Greek time) the temperature at the Sujiahui station reached 36.1 degrees Celsius, breaking the record for the highest temperature for the month of May which dates back 100 years,” he pointed out on social media Weibo the weather service.

A few hours later the temperature in the centerthat of Shanghai reached 36.7 degrees Celsius, according to the same source.

Thus, the previous record was broken by one point, which had been recorded four times in 1876, 1903, 1915 and 2018.

In mid-May the UN had warned that the 2023-27 period is almost certain to be the hottest on record on Earth due to greenhouse gases and the El Niño weather phenomenon.

The global temperature is expected to rise by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times, an ambitious goal adopted under the Paris Climate Agreement, the World Meteorological Organization estimated.
