Announcement on the arrest of the policemen who are suspected of trafficking in illegal immigrants, issued by the EL.AS headquarters.

As reported, 5 police officers were arrested as suspects for the offenses of bribing an employee, abuse of power, breach of duty and violation of the immigration and social integration code, while the action of 4 more foreigners residing outside the Greek territory was also ascertained by the Internal Affairs Service of the Security Forces of Northern Greece in the context of a police operation that took place today, Monday 29 May 2023.

As it emerged from the investigation so far, the police officers at least from October 2022 coming into contact with circuits operating in a neighboring country, they allegedly committed acts or omissions aimed at facilitating the entry into our country of citizens of third countries.

From the combined analysis of the material gathered, it emerged that the above facilitated in at least 12 cases the illegal entry into Greek territory of an unknown number of citizens of third countries.

What did the investigations find?

From the investigations carried out, the following were found and seized:

  • 26,550 euros,
  • 59 mobile phones,
  • 12 power banks,
  • 2,120 US dollars,
  • 850 Turkish Liras,
  • 23 British pounds,
  • 77 Romanian Lei,
  • multitude of banknotes from Asian countries and
  • bank card.

Those arrested, with a case filed against them, will be taken to the competent prosecuting authority.
