Today, Lefkada celebrates its Lady and patroness, Panagia Faneromeni.

The Holy Monastery of Faneromeni Lefkada is a historic Monastery – dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin – located just 3 kilometers from the capital Lefkada, in a magical location above the town which is said to have housed a temple of Aphrodite there in ancient times

She is the patroness and protector of “all the land of Lefkadians” and her grace is celebrated with all the splendor on Monday of the Holy Spirit.

The image of “Kyra” parades around the monastery in a crowded atmosphere, in the presence of thousands of believers from all over the country and accompanied by the Lefkada Philharmonic

The icon of the Virgin that exists today in a special chapel in the monastery – filled with tamas – is a copy of the miraculous icon, crafted by Hieromonk Beniamin Kontrakis on Mount Athos in 1887.

Panagia Faneromeni has been the religious center of the island for centuries as the oldest and largest monastery, while at the same time it is also the protector and patron of the island.

The Disciples of the Apostle Paul who arrived first on the island gathered the inhabitants here and preached Christianity, creating the first “house of euphoria”, while one of them, Sosion, was ordained the first bishop of Lefkada and founded the monastery.
