The well-known sports journalist Giorgos Georgiou passed away at the age of 71.

For the last time he was hospitalized at “Agios Savvas” hospital as he was suffering from cancer.

He had associated his name with sports journalism, while doing many radio and television shows.

Who was George Georgiou – His career

He has been professionally active in the field since 1982, as a member of the founding team of the sports newspaper “O Filathlos” of the publisher Giorgos Kouris, under the direction of Nikos Karagiannidis, while he also collaborated with the magazines Synchronos Athlitismos and Forza.

He became more widely known to the public through the daily column he kept in Philathlos, as well as with his first radio, later television show “The Fans Cafe».

He declared himself a fan of Apollon Smyrna, but in Philathlos in the 80s he reported on Olympiakos, many times in a critical and scathing manner (a more general feature of Philathlos in those years).

He was characterized by his objectivity and his tendency to say things “out of the blue”, criticizing institutions, persons and situations in sports and especially football.

The show “The Cafe of the Fans”, televised on Channel 5 by Giorgos Kouris and on the radio on Sprint FM, was the first show with a wide audience in Greece, which provided a platform for fans to express their opinions about sports events and not only .

His TV show has been hosted on Alpha, Channel 9, Teleasty, Extra 3, Action 24 and Kontra Channel from time to time.

From 2008 to 2021 he hosted daily radio shows on the Real FM radio station and was one of the station’s longest-serving journalists since its inception.

In March 2010 he suddenly announced his retirement from active journalism, a decision he retracted a day later, attributing it to personal and not professional reasons.
