American Samoa: Half-meter tsunami waves after volcanic activity in Tonga

by

Tsunami waves about half a meter high were observed on meters at sea level in the US capital Samoa after volcanic activity in Tonga, according to the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The threat of a tsunami continues and sea level fluctuations as well as strong sea currents pose dangers along coastal areas, the center said in a statement.

Authorities in Tonga, in the Pacific Ocean, have issued a tsunami alert following the eruption of an underwater volcano. Saturday’s eruption (local time) is the latest in a series of eruptions at Hunga Hai Volcano.

In New Zealand, officials have warned of rising sea levels due to the eruption of a volcano in Tonga. The National Emergency Management Agency has warned that strong and unusually strong currents as well as unpredictable waves could be recorded in some parts of New Zealand.
