A patient of the Papanikolaou hospital in Thessaloniki gave him gifts of life to fellow human beings after his death.

As stated in a hospital announcement, the Administration of “Papanikolau” warmly thanks the relatives of the 75-year-old patient, who “generously proceeded in an act of humanity through the process of donating his organs”.

The hospital’s announcement in detail:

The Administration of the “Georgios Papanikolaou” General Hospital and the medical and nursing staff of the 2nd Intensive Care Unit (ICU) warmly thank the relatives of the hospitalized patient, who generously carried out an act of humanity through the process of donating his organs.

In the 2nd ICU on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, the removal of organs from a 75-year-old man was successfully completed with the cooperation of doctors, nurses and other staff of the 2nd ICU and the surgical teams receiving the organs: From the surgical team at G.N.Th. “Hippocrateus” for receiving the kidneys and from the P.G.N. AHEPA for the reception of the corneas. Kidney transplantation in compatible recipients was performed at the Athens People’s Hospital in a 67-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman respectively, while the corneas are expected to be transplanted within the next few days.

The contribution of the staff of the Units and the surgical teams receiving the organs is decisive in the successful outcome of the organ donation process under the general coordination of the Hellenic Transplantation Organization but also with the valuable contribution of the medical and nursing staff of the Hospital who participate in this process.

Organ donation requires magnanimity and sensitivity that honors the memory of the deceased and creates significant prospects for transplant patients, giving them and their families a breath of life.“.
