A total “facelift” begins at the Archaeological Museum of Lamia, a space that displays the cultural heritage of the region and has been operating for more than 30 years.

A restructuring of the museum’s exhibits and permanent collection, along with enrichment with new exhibition material, has already been planned.

According to the head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Fthiotida Evrytania, K. Karantzali, “an introductory section will be created that will guide the visitor to the permanent collection of the museum, while at the same time an innovative presentation has been studied while maintaining the main semantic axes of the existing exhibition”.

It is worth noting that this was deemed necessary as the number of visitors to the museum is increasing and at the same time there are new findings in the area and in this way new special thematic sections that are interesting for the visitor are enriched.

At the same time, the rearrangement, inside the museum, will bring similar objects very close to each other, so that there is a homogeneity while, according to the archaeologists, the informative and interpretative material that is necessary for the visitors is redesigned and supplemented.

About one million euros has already been approved by the new NSRF and the “facelift” works are starting, which includes new exhibition equipment, i.e. showcases but also bases for the placement of the finds, old and new, at the same time various metal structures have been studied, while giving greater importance also in the modernization of the exhibition lighting through which everything you place in the exhibition will now be highlighted.

As the head of the Ephorate of Antiquities underlines “the project includes the radical modernization of the exhibition highlight lighting, both of the general scenography and that within the showcases as well as the functional and aesthetic upgrade of the existing showcases” and continues by saying “the modernization of the air conditioning installation (Heating-Cooling) in the exhibition space, as well as the technical improvements to upgrade the existing mechanical installation and its electrical support will be carried out by the Department of Studies and Execution of Museums and Cultural Buildings Projects”

In the course of the 30 years that the Archaeological Museum of Lamia has been operating, in addition to the thousands of visits, it hosts a series of actions, which actually bring the public, and especially the students, closer to the findings of the area, highlighting in this way the archaeological wealth that has been identified by the archaeological hoe in the entire county.

Just 24 hours before the archaeological museum closed, the “green cultural routes” together with the events that accompanied them with the participation of students were the ones that led to the museum hundreds of students from the last grades of elementary and high schools. Among the actions that were organized was an action entitled “Historical and Archaeological Walk in the Castle of Lamia” where a total of students from various schools in the area participated and whose main goal was to get to know the place, the buildings, the people and the events from the revolution to today. The specific visits were also the conclusion of its 30 years of operation.

Similar actions were organized in other archaeological sites such as Sea urchinthe Agios Konstantinos and Ambiklia.

Recently, maintenance and restoration work has been carried out on a part of the walls of the Castle of Lamia. This is the south-eastern part of the Castle and the southern Gate, and maintenance and restoration is done with special materials so as to prevent any risk of collapse.
