The Municipal Authority of Ioannina implemented the decision of the previous Municipal Council and gave the name of the 20-year-old student of the Dairy School from Crete Vangelis Giakoumakis, on the road where he breathed his last 8 years ago.

The case with the deceased Giakoumakis had been of intense concern, not only to the local community, but also to the whole of Greece, due to his tragic death, which brought to light the problem of abuse and violent behaviors that are often kept silent. With his statement, the mayor Dimitris Papageorgiou emphasized that “it was the responsibility of the Municipal Authority to honor Vangelis Giakoumakis who was a victim of bullying and became a symbol of thousands of people of all ages” and sent a message mainly to young children that “they should not be silent when they experience situations violence and any racism”.

The mayor concluded by pointing out, how “society together with the state have an obligation and duty to attack these phenomena, so that another human soul is not lost for a similar reason”.
