A professional fisherman in Italy caught a catfish which may break the world record in size. Alessandro Biancardi’s catch was over 9ft (2.75m) – about the size of a van!

Biancardi was fishing alone in the Po River when “the water level had started to drop” and he suddenly felt a “strong pull”.

“The fish was still for a few seconds before a very complex battle began, between strong currents and several submerged obstacles,” the angler wrote on the website for his fishing team, MADCAT, on May 31.

The “prehistoric fish” he put up a 40-minute fight, he said, and when he first appeared, Biancardi said he realized he had “hooked a monster.”

The length of the fish has been sent to the International Game Fish Association, but MADCAT clarifies that the process to confirm the record “takes some time”.
