The baby storks fell from a PPC pillar, which was their nest, and are now being treated by “Veterinarians in Action”
Two stork chicks, which fell from their nest, are being treated by the “Veterinarians in action” at the organization’s rescue center in Serres.
The baby storks fell from a great height, from a PPC pillar, which was their nest, and the residents of Ano Mitrousi immediately called the volunteer veterinarians in order to provide first aid to the beautiful birds.
“Unfortunately these phenomena are frequent and can happen, either because there is not enough space in the nest, as the eggs do not hatch at the same time, or because the parent storks for some reason threw their young from the nest, especially if they could no longer feed them. This is the Law of nature sometimes,” the president of the “Veterinarians in Action” organization and scientific associate of the Serres Philanthropic Club, Zoe Kontou, tells APE-MPE.
The small migratory birds were taken by specialist vets to the charity’s headquarters and are being treated safely so they can migrate in October.
“When they were brought in, they were so small they looked like little chickens, with one in particular in a very difficult situation. We didn’t know if he would live. Today they are a few weeks old, but they still can’t fly because they are small, but now healthy,” explains Mrs. Kondou.
The organization “Vets in Action” is a non-profit organization, part of the international organization “Vets in Action”, with headquarters in Switzerland and local organizations in Italy, Greece and Bulgaria. Its aim is the care of wild animals and birds, but also the sterilization of stray and domestic animals. It is made up of animal-loving volunteers and veterinarians, and as for Serres, in the last few months alone they managed to sterilize 404 stray cats and treat many animals and birds. It should be noted that the great project of “Veterinarians in Action” is financed exclusively by donations from citizens.
“Our goal in Serres is to quickly manage to create a special bird rescue center, as our prefecture, with its fauna and the presence of hundreds of bird species, such as in Lake Kerkini, which is one of the most important wetlands in Europe , we should be able to intervene drastically and provide our help, wherever it is needed”, concludes Ms. Kotou.
