They were identified, after exploiting information, a multitude antiquities in New Philadelphia and Corinth, by the Department of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities, of the Sub-Directorate for the Protection of Property Rights, Cultural Heritage and Environment, of the Attica Security Directorate.

A 42-year-old man accused of violation of antiquities protection legislation and in general cultural heritage and weapons.

In particular, in the context of utilizing information, a team of police officers from the above service was formed and went to the New Philadelphia grove, where they identified and collected the following ancient objects:

  • -3- hollow vessels (basins) of late Roman times,
  • late Roman vase fragment,
  • -3- parts of the neck and rim of two amphorae from late Roman times,
  • clay figurine of a standing female figure, Hellenistic period,
  • bronze male figurine,
  • copper closed vessel with embossed decoration and
  • -5- metal objects.

The process of identifying the perpetrator who deposited the above items in the grove is ongoing.

After investigating similar information, an operational action was planned and implemented in the home of the 42-year-old arrested in Corinth and in related areas (working and storage), where the following were found and confiscated:

  • -25- bronze coins of Roman and late Roman times,
  • metal detector and detector accessory,
  • air pistol,
  • folding globe,
  • -2- cameras, lens and diopters,
  • laptop computer and a host of data storage devices.

The confiscated antiquities were shown to an archaeologist of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens, who opined that they fall within the protective provisions of the Law for the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage in general.

Subsequently, the movable monuments were handed over to the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens for safekeeping and final assessment, while the ancient coins were handed over to the Numismatic Museum of Athens.

The arrested person was taken to the Criminal Prosecutor of Athens.
