Antiquities of particular value were owned by a 66-year-old man, who was arrested in Thessaloniki.
The appropriate use of information by police officers of the Department of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities of the Directorate of Security of Thessaloniki led to the arrest of a 66-year-old citizen, against whom a case file was filed for violation of the Legislation “For the Protection of Antiquities” and violation of the Legislation “On Weapons”.
In particular, during an operation carried out in the morning yesterday (30-06-2023), inside a jewelry store owned by the arrested person in the center of the city, (1) an old-style Holy Gospel, (1) a receipt for the above item in which the details of a 78-year-old citizen were listed and a relevant case file and (242) coins were filed against him.
After the opinion of a competent archaeologist of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Thessaloniki, the Holy Gospel and (6) of the coins fall under the protective provisions of the Legislation “For the Protection of Antiquities and cultural heritage in general”.
Specifically, the Holy Gospel is chronologically included in the 18th century and the coins before 1453 AD.
In addition, after a search carried out at the 66-year-old’s house, a total of (216) cartridges were found and confiscated.
The arrested person will be taken to the competent Prosecutor.
