The tragic incident of the death of a horse in Corfu, which died while pulling a carriage in the center of Corfu town, has brought back the issue of the use of horses in carriages with reactions from animal welfare organizations strong.

In Chania, animal lovers held a demonstration at noon on Saturday in the Venetian harbor with the slogan “End to the carriages of shame”

In a symbolic move, the protestors marched with their vehicles and went to the town hall of Chania, which is the authority responsible for issuing licenses to coach drivers.

As they pointed out, this is abuse of the horses and the aim is to revoke the licenses and finally ban the use of the carriages for tourist rides.

“Chania will not become Corfu and Santorini” explained the members of animal welfare associations.

The gathered demand, as they reported, now from the Mayor of Chania, “that the slavery licenses of all the horses abused in the carriages of shame in the Old Port of Chania be revoked”.

The gathering was held with the support of Nemesis – Panhellenic Federation for the environment, animals, hunting.
