From the middle of this week, the thermometer is expected to rise in many regions of Greece above 40 degrees Celsius, with the German News Network (RND) commenting.

“In Athens and other cities, municipalities will provide air-conditioned public spaces where people can seek refuge from the heat from Tuesday,” RND notes. “However, tourists on most islands will probably be spared the worst, as it will be there the coolness of the sea air. Both in Crete and in Mykonos and other islands of the Cyclades, the temperature will not exceed 34 degrees,” he adds.

[…] Heatwaves are not an unusual phenomenon in Greece during the summer months. However, they present increase in volume and frequency. According to a study by Greek meteorologists published in the scientific journal “Climate” at the beginning of this year, from 1950 to 1990, Greece experienced an average of 0.7 heat waves per year. Between 1990 and 2020, they increased to 1.1 per year. A corresponding increase is also observed at the regional level: the areas of Greece that are affected by a heat wave at least once a year have doubled since 1990″.
