Large quantities of illegal hydrofluorocarbons (freon) traded through companies in the Greek market, while these were a counterfeit product and had not received the required license, were detected, confiscated and the corresponding fines were imposed in Thessaly and Peloponnese by the inspectors of mixed levels of control.

Specifically, the checks were carried out in the context of information exploitation and the following fines were imposed:

– In warehouses in the Peloponnese region, 8,247 kg of imitation hydrofluorocarbons were detected and seized. A fine of 106,500 euros is imposed on the companies that traded the above quantities. The owner of the companies was arrested by ELAS and the automatic procedure will be followed.

– In warehouses in the area of ​​Thessaly, 6,270 kg of illegal hydrofluorocarbons, which did not have the necessary permit, were detected and seized, as well as 1,046 kg of counterfeit product. A fine of 100,000 euros is imposed on the company.

The seized hydrofluorocarbon (freon) imitation products are prohibited as they are environmentally hazardous products according to Regulation 517/14 of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe.

The seized 15,609 kg will be transported by special hazardous waste transport vehicles to a special recycling facility in the Netherlands.

The Minister of Development, Kostas Skrekas, said: “Our Government is sending a clear message to everyone. We will not tolerate any phenomenon of delinquency. The protection of consumers, the environment and the proper functioning of the market within the framework of legality, is our central commitment that will be implemented by the control mechanisms of the state, in every way”.

The auditors were from the Interagency Market Control Unit (DIMEA) of the Ministry of Development in collaboration with the Property Rights sub-directorate of Attica Security of ELAS, the Attica Customs Audit Service (ELYT) and the Mobile Audit Team (KOE) of Igoumenitsa of the Ministry of Finance and with the assistance of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF).
