In Western Attica, Loutraki and Rhodes the open fronts
All the Civil Protection forces continue to fight the fires, mainly in Western Attica but also in the wider area of Loutraki, where the fires have reached large proportions, as reported by the press representative of the Fire Brigade, fire chief Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, in an emergency briefing on the ongoing forest fires. As he said, aerial means will not be at their disposal during the night “but the firefighters, volunteers, the Armed Forces, the security forces as well as all the competent agencies are making every possible effort in the field to limit the fires”.
Regarding the fire that broke out in the afternoon in Embonas, Rhodes, Mr. Vathrakogiannis pointed out that it is ongoing and 66 firefighters with 3 groups of infantry departments and 18 vehicles are working, while from the air 3 aircraft and a helicopter tried until the last light. Support is also provided by water carriers and project machinery of the local government and as he pointed out, so far no residential areas are threatened.
“A difficult day is dawning. We remind you that the meteorological conditions that are expected to prevail tomorrow, combined with the strong winds of intensity 7 Beaufort in the Aegean, increase the risk of fire occurrence and expansion. We ask for the cooperation of all citizens. The heat wave has not lost its momentum and any negligence can lead to a major disaster,” he noted.
