Municipalities and voluntary groups are appealing for help to those who have machines
The fire in Apollon Rhodes is taking on uncontrollable proportions – one of the three major fronts that have been burning since yesterday on the island.
The fiery blaze has turned to ashes tens of acres of virgin forest in the area between Apollona and Laerma.
According to Rodiaki, the fire is currently raging uncontrollably while there are constant rekindlings on all fronts.
The situation is considered particularly difficult, and there are fears that the fire will spread to a wider area.
A Chinook war helicopter has already arrived and is operating in Rhodes.
With their announcements, the local government and volunteer groups appeal to those who can help fight the fire, especially those who have machinery.
In its emergency announcement, the civil protection of the South Aegean Region states that all construction machinery and water tankers, which are called to assist in the firefighting work, are in the process of being requisitioned.
Also, due to the fire, the roads from Salako to Empona, from Apollon to Empona and from Laerma to Apollon are closed.
