776 BC: The first Olympic Games begin in Olympia.
1833: By royal decree, the Church of Greece is declared autocephalous and subordinate to the state. This unilateral action is not recognized by the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
1912:Ralph Vaughan Williams presents ‘The Wasps’ suite, featuring the music he wrote for Aristophanes’ ‘The Wasps’.
1952: In Egypt, Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrows King Farouk and takes over the government of the country.
1974: Drowned in the blood of crime in Cyprus, the junta of Athens is collapsing. In a meeting with the participation of politicians, it is decided to summon Konstantinos Karamanlis from Paris. In Cyprus, the appointed Nikos Samson resigns from the presidency and his place is taken by Glaukos Cleridis.
