“Since midday, the rescue operation has been underway from the areas of Kiotari and Lardos of Rhodes. From these points, with five floats of L.S. and with over 30 private boats 1000-1500 people were transported to Kalathos and from there by land to Rhodes. At the same time, two inflatables of the Greek Army with officers of the L.S. they scanned the surrounding areas in case an evacuation from another beach was necessary, while a helicopter from the L.S. was conducting aerial surveillance. Subsequently, an order was given by the minister and three passenger ferries were booked in the port of Rhodes which had the capacity to host 1100 people”, said the press representative of L.S. Nikolaos Alexiou.
“Furthermore, there was again a need to evacuate people from Kiotari because a hotel was evacuated again. There two boats of L.S. and four passenger tourist boats freed people, who were transferred to a larger floating vessel and went to the port of Rhodes. Late at night until dawn there was a rescue operation in Gennadi with two boats of the LS, three inflatables of the ES, two private speedboats, two tugboats and four tourist passenger boats. All the people freed by sea were taken to the port of Rhodes. In total, a total of around 2,500 people have been freed,” he added.
