About 8,000 people, mostly foreign visitors, were accommodated last night and remain until now in schools and closed stadiums in the city and in villages of Rhodes.
Huge and unprecedented is the wave of solidarity and offer of the residents of the island of Rhodes to our fire-stricken fellow citizens and tourists who, since last night, have been active from the first moment and helped to set up the basic spaces that would host those in need.
About 8,000 people, mostly foreign visitors, were accommodated last night and remain until now in schools and closed stadiums in the city and in villages of Rhodes.
Quite a few people are also present in hotel conference centers and on ships in the port of Rhodes.
As stated by the deputy mayor of Rhodes, Mr. Thanasis Virinis, all the schools in the city of Rhodes, but also in villages such as Kalythies, Afantou, Archangelos, Ialyssos, Kremasti, have been opened and fire victims have been transferred there from the areas of South Rhodes. It is indicated that approximately 700 people were accommodated in the Venetoklio indoor stadium, 500 people in Rodion Paideia, 350 people in the College of Rhodes, while the halls of schools and closed gymnasiums in all the aforementioned villages are full.
With the help of hundreds of volunteers who from the first moment last night were present to help set up and also in the operation of these temporary accommodation centers, the foreign tourists had the best possible service.
From early in the morning, the fire victims were provided with food, fruit, juices, water, all offered by our fellow citizens, private individuals who opened their businesses and sent as much food as they could, and they have even opened supermarkets and mini markets to serve them. Already the shops in question are being overwhelmed by our fellow citizens who are rushing to supply their nearby areas with the essentials.
It is worth noting that there are also dozens of businessmen who offer portions of food in their restaurants, and even a place for tourists to sleep, while hotels have accommodated the fire victims in air-conditioned rooms, while there are also dozens of our fellow citizens who since yesterday have their own homes in order to host, offer a bath and a sleep to those who need it.
