A difficult night is predicted for the residents of the area
The residents of Dervenakia, Achaia – in the region of Aigio – will have a difficult night tonight, as a large fire has been raging in the forest above the National Road since early afternoon.
During the night, 35 vehicles, 99 firefighters and infantry units along with three teams of the Special Forestry Operations Unit (Forest Commander) operate on the front.
Shortly after 19:30 a message was sent from 112 for the evacuation of the Kastro settlement towards Katholiko while, as the deputy governor of Achaias Charalambos Bonanos told Sky 100.3, the fire is moving towards Agia Irini and Zachloritika
According to SKAI’s correspondent, Christos Stratoulakos, the fire is burning virgin forest in an inaccessible area and has already entered the Vouraikos gorge. However, the winds in the region are constantly changing direction, with the forces fighting to prevent it from crossing the national road.
Earlier, four German tourists – a family – who were trapped in the smoke were rescued by an EMODE team in Vouraikos.
