The death toll from a landslide in northwest China’s Shaanxi province has risen to four, state radio reported today, as the country grapples with unusually high rainfall for the season.

State television (CCTV) earlier reported that Friday’s landslide in the city of Xi’an, following heavy rains in the area, left 18 people dead or missing, with authorities confirming two deaths.

“Four people have died,” state radio said on the social media platform Weibo.

In a video released by the official Xinhua (New China) news agency, broken trees and carry-on materials can be seen piling up along muddy roads in a village located in a mountainous area, where homes and infrastructure were damaged or completely destroyed.

Search and rescue efforts were underway, with a total of 81 people and 11 vehicles involved in the operation, according to state radio.

China has been dealing with very heavy rains and many deadly floods for several weeks. The toll from the torrential rains that hit the northern part of the country since July 31 continues to rise. According to the latest figures released on Friday, at least 78 people have died.
