The Minister of Citizen Protection, Mr. Yiannis Economouhad today, Monday August 21, working meeting, via teleconference, with the Director of the Transport Engineering Laboratory of NTUA, Deputy Professor, Konstantinos Kepaptsoglou.

Mr. Kepaptsoglou expressed the opinion that the management of incidents – when traffic congestion is observed or it is deemed necessary to stop traffic on national roads due to extreme weather phenomena or accidents – requires more time anyway, in order not to compromise the safety of drivers and passengers , which is undeniably an absolute priority. He focused, in fact, on the part of providing timely information to drivers of passing vehicles, with the use of new technologies.

The Minister asked Mr. Kepaptsoglou to re-evaluate the security protocols – which have been submitted, among others, to EL.AS. the concessionaires – based on international and domestic experience and scientific research in respective cases, the increase in traffic load in relation to the original design of the national roads, but also the new developments that technology has brought to the automotive industry, mainly with the increasing traffic electric vehicles. At the same time, the possibility of implementing a protocol – in collaboration with the co-competent Ministries – for a more immediate and coordinated response in extremely extraordinary cases will be explored.

Mr. Yiannis Oikonomou emphasized that, as in the recent experience of the Athens-Corinth highway with the fire in a tanker carrying dangerous cargo, the only priority, at the level of operational management, is the safeguarding of human life.

In addition to the modernization of safety protocols for the optimal management of emergency incidents, another political priority of the Ministry of Citizen Protection was also discussed: the reduction of road accidents and the upgrading of road safety, through a range of policies currently under development, with an emphasis in the introduction of new technologies both in surveillance and in the verification of violations. The safety of pedestrians and passengers is very important and needs immediate improvement.
