A nightmarish night is ahead of the firefighters and volunteers who, together with the residents, are trying to save what they can in the big fire in central Evia.

At the moment there are three active fire fronts in this area, which is also the headache of the firefighters.

The front towards Vatonda runs through a wooded area with many pine trees, while in the same area there are livestock facilities.

The industrial area of Nea Artaki, although it has been evacuated by the workers who are there, is a headache for the fire brigade as it is an area full of poultry farms, pig pens and many wooden structures.

There are also various fronts of rekindling, mainly in the area where the fire started. The flare-ups within a short time become huge fronts aided by the strong winds blowing in the area.

It is characteristic that a mini-coordinating committee was set up in the area, so that the situation could be assessed and the priorities set for the movements during the night. The firefighting forces have been strengthened, while there are problems with the electricity supply as hundreds of poles have been burnt by the flames and in many areas the electric wires were on the ground.

In the areas surrounded by the fronts of the fire, there was a water cut, however, the damage was repaired, as DEDDIE crews installed generators so that the water supply necessary to fight the fire could continue uninterrupted.

The fire in its path has burned pine forest, olive groves and also facilities, but so far there is no assessment of the damages.

Firefighters are afraid of too much wind. As the deputy governor of Evia, Giorgos Kelaiditis, pointed out speaking to APE-MPE, “the battle in the dark is unequal. The fire during the night can take on catastrophic proportions if the winds do not stop.”

At this time, 92 firefighters and three infantry units with a total of 30 vehicles are on the front lines of the fire, while French firefighters are also participating in the extinguishing battle. At the same time there are heavy machinery of the municipalities and the region as well as water vehicles.
