Great loss of livestock and arable lands in the Evros, but also the destruction of herds, infrastructure, warehouses and agricultural machinery, due to the fire that broke out early on Saturday in the Melia area of ​​Alexandroupolis and is still raging in the area, capture the latest data notified to APE-MPE by the head of his branch ELGA in Alexandroupoli (with responsibility also in the areas of Xanthi, Rodopi and Evros) Dimitris Pantazis.
So far and according to the confirmed data available to Mr. Pantazis, 1,200 beehives and hives have been burned in the Evros area, in total 26,264 in South Evros, Soufli and Alexandroupolis, in which 16,068 are located, while they were charred due to of the fire 910 small animals, with the majority of them being goats and sheep, 30 lambs and eight cows. “This is a huge disaster,” noted Mr. Pantazis, adding that “the aforementioned losses have been recorded and today they are expected to be closed by ELGA”. It is recalled that according to data from the regional unit of Evros in Alexandroupolis, Ferres, Soufli and Samothraki, 15,716 cattle, 130,871 sheep and goats and 4,177 pigs are registered.
In addition, according to the head of the ELGA branch in Alexandroupolis, it is estimated that more than 50 sheepfolds have been burned in Evros, while he characterized any assessment regarding agricultural infrastructure, warehouses with products and animal feed and agricultural equipment as premature. which have been destroyed by the fire.
Regarding the cultivated lands in the region, he said that the burnt lands are estimated at thousands of acres, while he reminded that in the areas where the fire has already passed, including Nipsa, Amfitriti, Loutro, Aetochori, Pefka and towards the area of ​​Ferre, mainly sunflowers, vines, almonds and some mints and clovers are cultivated.
According to the provisional data for 2022, made available to APE-MPE by the special advisor of the Hellenic Fruit, Vegetable and Juice Export Trading Enterprises “Incofruit Hellas”, Giorgos Polychronakis, in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace the cultivated areas amount to 442,469 hectares, out of of which 165,554 hectares in Evros, 101,666 hectares in Rhodope, 50,597 hectares in Kavala 50,597 hectares, in Xanthi 56,041 hectares and in Drama 68,613 hectares.
