The first thrombolysis in a multi-functional regional clinic of a patient with a myocardial infarction was successfully performed, at PPI Serifos, announced the general family doctor and scientific manager at the Serifos Regional Clinic, Thanasis Kontaris.

The “doctor of Serifos”, as he is called, announced in a post on social media that he had performed a life-saving operation on a patient who was vacationing on the island.

Mr. Kontaris stated that “knowing the risk, the complications but also the benefits, and after the patient’s consent, we proceeded with thrombolysis following the international guidelines. Almost immediately after administration of the thrombolytic, the patient was asymptomatic and the ischemic changes on the cardiogram disappeared! »

The patient, a 67-year-old man, is now safe in a heart attack monitoring unit in Red Stavros, the doctor adds in his post.

The story of doctor Thanasis Kontaris is well known since he shocked with the cry of anguish he emitted about the problems of the National Health System.

The doctor who left Sweden in 2018 to come to Serifos in order to contribute to his country endured the Greek health system for four years before submitting his resignation. Fortunately, for the island’s residents and visitors, Mr. Kontaris reversed his decision.

“It was an act of desperation in which I was led by the fear of a new summer similar to last year and a cry of anguish in order to highlight the deficiencies in the Health Services throughout the Cyclades” he explained in an interview.
The support of colleagues was a catalyst for him to remain in his position as he stated regarding what contributed to changing his decision to resign was that “The main thing is that two colleagues, a pediatrician and a general practitioner promised that they would come and fight together here in the summer from July 1st. This will mean that for the first time there will be two general practitioners, a pediatrician and three rural doctors along with two nurses,” he explains.

In the end, as the interventional cardiologist of the Red Cross, Yiannis Tsiafoutis, who has now taken over the patient, says “the possibilities are limitless when people want .. the health system at its best..”
