Harder years in 2021 and 2023 – Table and map with Copernicus’ breakdown of the Attica fires
The large fires of recent years have led Attica to a state of desertification, as, according to the latest data from Copernicus, from 2017 to today, 600,000 hectares (of which over 400,000 hectares of forest) were lost, in 12 large fires caused in the region.
The most difficult years were 2021 and this year, as almost 450,000 hectares were burned in total, according to updated data from the Copernicus Rapid Mapping Service and the European Observatory for Forest Fires (EFFIS), reports meteo.gr
The perimeter of the burned areas is given on the following map:
The total area of the Attica Region (excluding the area of Troizinia, the islands and the Basin) is 2,500,000 acres, so in the last 7 years 25% of the total area has been burned by forest fires.
In the Region of Attica, the area of forest lands is approximately 1,230,000 acres and in the last 7 years, 405,000 acres of forest have been burned, i.e. 33% of the forest area.
