Administrative fines of more than 12,000 euros were confirmed in total during the last 2 months at the expense of animal owners, following checks carried out by mixed echelons in areas of the urban complex of Thessaloniki for the observance of the legislation on controlled companion animals.

The echelons consisted of police officers and employees of the Municipal Police and the Veterinary Service of the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

According to an announcement by the Hellenic Republic of Greece, a total of 158 animal owners were checked and 44 violations were confirmed (a total of 12,700 euros), most of which (35) were for walking an animal without a leash and failing to provide the required electronic identification.

Seven fines were linked to violations of hygiene rules and one to non-observance of the provisions on common peace and ill treatment of the animal, respectively.

As mentioned in the same announcement, similar controls will continue and be extended to places where there is an increased attendance of owners of controlled animals in order to effectively inform citizens, observe legality and ensure the well-being of animals.
