K. Bakoyannis: The clinic for our four-legged friends signals “civilization” in practice – Athens is a protagonist and a pioneer in the protection of animals
The Municipality of Athens is moving forward with comprehensive care and free medical care for stray and domestic animals – with guardians who belong to vulnerable groups – implementing the commitment of the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, that Athens will acquire its own modern, fully equipped, first Municipal Veterinary Clinic.
The Municipal Veterinary Clinic, located at the junction of Mesogeion Avenue and Trikalon Street, in front of the Gendarmerie Grove in Ampelokipi, opened its doors at noon on Sunday.
The Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, stated: “For all of us in the Municipality of Athens, the practical and essential protection of animals is civilization in action. With the “Socrates Refuge” we gave shelter, food and warmth to the homeless of our city. With the Municipal Veterinary Clinic we are taking the next big step. We are happy to be pioneers and protagonists in the care of our four-legged friends. A big thank you to the volunteers who help us so much in this mission.”
On her part, Serafina Avramidou, mandated municipal councilor for stray animals. he emphasized: “In Athens, today we satisfy a need that all animal lovers prioritize as the first, for the care and containment of strays. We built a small modern clinic for our beloved four-legged friends. Here we will provide nursing and care. Here we take the decisive step to fully control the number of homeless people in Athens. Everyone in the Municipality of Athens, with K. Bakoyannis first and I thank him for this, understand the true meaning of philo-life”.
The Municipal Veterinary Clinic will operate daily from 09.00-17.00, providing all services free of charge to stray and controlled animals, municipal guardians, who belong to the sensitive and vulnerable social groups, as defined by Law 4830/2023 (disabled, unemployed , three-child, multiple-child, single-parent families and KEA beneficiaries).
The veterinary clinic has a fully equipped operating room, with an anesthetic machine, a diagnostic area, where the two veterinarians of the Municipality of Athens will provide the basic medical services that accompany an animal’s health book, medical treatment – where necessary – and sterilizations.
There are also specially designed areas for short-term hospitalization, if deemed necessary, while in the coming months, the clinic will be open 24 hours a day, with veterinarians and assistants.
