The water will only be restored for 3-4 hours, as announced a while ago by the mayor of Volos, Achilleas Beos, and this so that the residents can collect water. As he said, among other things, the water supply will start from 6 am onwards, will last for 3-4 hours and will be cut off after the evening.

Mr. Beos described the situation in the water supply network in the darkest colors, pointing out that at the same time the volume of water received by Pelion creates many problems in Volos, while he mentioned that the electricity supply will be restored by the evening.

“Truly the city for four days experiences a situation of biblical destruction. If someone is looking for blame, I have no problem, it is my fault that it has been raining for four days, that there has been a deluge. Today as we speak, it’s not that it continues to rain, it’s that it’s also raining in Pelion and all this water is coming down with speed, vindictively I would say, and repeatedly the walls have been broken and tons of mud has come into the city. The important problem is the electricity, and I thank the PPC people for their superhuman efforts. Electricity will be provided throughout the city until late at night. It would have happened sooner, but unfortunately the mud that came entered the infrastructures and they were destroyed,” he noted.

With regard to the water supply, after the brief interventions made for the water supply, he referred to the water supply program but also described the destruction at the pumping stations, while underlining that there is no picture of the damage, since there is no access.

“The big problem, which I don’t want to think about, is water. The springs in Pelion, Portaria Makrynitsa, Katihori and Alli Meria have been completely destroyed. The springs that supply 60% of Volos with water have disappeared, as well as the pumping stations, as the ground subsided. There is no access because the roads have been blocked. We cannot give a high estimate today,” he said.

Mr. Beos pointed out that DEYAMB and the contractors under adverse conditions have achieved the following: Around 18:00-18:30 water will be provided from Giannis Dimos and Kato, from Anavros to Krausidona. But this water is pumped from 4-5 boreholes. So it will be given in moderation. It will work for 3-4 hours and will be cut in the evening hours until the morning. “This water that will be given now is temporary. The technicians have done small by-pass interventions to provide this water and pumping must be stopped to fill the tanks,” he said.

At the same time, water will be provided to Nea Ionia from Maiandros and below at the same time. In Portaria and Katihori they have water. But he also noted that: “In the other areas, such as Agios Georgios, Agia Paraskevi and Alli Meria, it is a disaster and I ask for understanding. This whole network takes days. Let the weather calm down, let God put his hand, and solutions will be provided. There is also a government echelon here to look at everything for the restoration of the network and make it new”.

In a related question of “Magnesianews” to the director of DEYAMB, Mr. Koutsifelis, about the suitability of the water that will be provided, he commented that it will be chlorinated but because the network is empty all these days it will carry away a lot of materials and soil, so he recommended the no one should drink in the early hours. From then on it will be normal.

A program will be announced every day. He did not make a case for the restoration of the damages, stressing that, for example, in the spring water pipeline, the 12-kilometer road has been damaged and they are now repairing it, without having any idea of the damage. Since yesterday, 250 meters have been built, said the director of DEYAMB.

Water trucks 24 hours a day

Mr. Beos said that with the help of Athenian businessmen, they have already shared 15 water tankers around the world and another 30 are expected. 24-hour delivery vans for water distribution.

“Already in the morning with some citizens in Palaia we loaded water and distributed it there, where the water is 1.5 meters and we are registering families in need of medicine to take to them. In the Georgoula camp, today and tomorrow they are preparing 100 portions of food to be distributed in Palaia and in Neapoli in Agios Tryfonas” added Mr. Beos.

Finally, Mr. Beos pointed out that the President of the Republic, Ms. Sakellaropoulou, contacted him, noting that she showed obvious interest and thanked her for that.
