The new world-class supercomputer will be used to advance research and development in areas such as energy-efficient technologies, weather forecasting and marine and ocean research
This afternoon, the European Commission, the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), the Portuguese Prime Minister Mr. Antonio Costa and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology will launch “Deucalion”, the latest supercomputer of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. “Deucalion” is located on the Azurem campus in Guimaraes, Portugal.
The new, world-class supercomputer will be used to advance research and development in areas such as energy-efficient technologies, weather forecasting and marine and ocean research. It will also contribute to the development of industrial applications for drug discovery, design of new materials, neuroscience, development of climate-friendly energy systems, etc.
“Deucalion”, the seventh supercomputer of the EuroHPC joint venture to be installed in the European Union, is the most powerful and most advanced computing resource available to Portugal today. It represents an investment of €20 million, including €7 million in EU funding, and has a peak performance of 10 Petaflops (i.e. 10 quadrillion calculations per second). In addition, it features a unique architecture in Europe, providing European users with access to an innovative design that will complement and enrich the diverse computing architectures available in EuroHPC systems.
“Deucalion” joins the existing supercomputers of the EuroHPC joint venture already in operation: Discoverer in Bulgaria, MeluXina in Luxembourg, Vega in Slovenia, Karolina supercomputer in the Czech Republic, LEONARDO in Italy and LUMI in Finland . Shortly after the inauguration of “Deucalion” in the fall will follow the inauguration of the third European pre-hexascale supercomputer MareNostrum5 5 in Spain.
