More than 300 birds, from 26 different species, her scientists rang Nestos – Vistonidas and Rhodope National Parks Management Unit of OFYPEKA (Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization).

Bird rings were carried out in the last week of August in the framework of the act “Management Actions of Protected Areas, Species and Habitats in the area of responsibility of the former Nestos-Vistonidas-Ismaridas and Thassos Delta Management Body”. They mainly concerned birds that came from the species Thamnochirovak (Sylvia communis), Thamnophylloscopus (Phylloscopus trochilus), Kipotchirovak (Sylvia borin), Vunotchirovak (Sylvia curruca) and Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla).

Ringing is one of the main scientific methods of studying birds, with the aim of research and their protection. Their capture is done with special nets which are placed in the areas of interest. The qualified and experienced staff places a ring, metal or colored on the tarsus (leg) of the bird, with a unique code.

After staff determine their sex and age and record data useful for their study, such as their wing, tarsus and bill length, fat, the birds are then released back into the wild.

The unique number engraved on the rings refers to exactly when, in which region and in which country the ring was made. Thus, when ringed birds are observed in the future, important information can be extracted about the migratory routes they follow, their local movements, the difficulties they face, their life span, and targeted management measures for their conservation can be proposed and implemented. .
