A meeting was held today at the Public Health Coordination Center set up by the Ministry of Health, at the Laboratory of Hygiene and Epidemiology of the Medical Department of the University of Thessaly, to deal with the consequences of the flood phenomena, under the Deputy Minister of Health Irini Agapidaki.

The operational activity of the Center is coordinated by Professor of Hygiene and Epidemiology Christos Hatzichristodoulou.

The meeting was attended by: the representatives of the Region, Mr. A. Kontos, Mr. G. Zigras and X. Michalakis, the Professors of the University of Thessaly and experts in related issues, M. Speletas, N. Papadopoulos, D. Pervanidou from EODY, O. Pinaka from the Mobile Health Units (COMY), and Mr. M. Kyritsis, H. Bogoyannidou and V. Nakoulas from the Laboratory of Hygiene and Epidemiology of the Department of Medicine of the University of Thessaly.

He presented himself at the meeting operational planning for the prevention and response to Public Health threatswhile at the same time the participants were informed about the actions that the Ministry of Health has already taken.

Particularly:

1. The operational planning for the audit was presented and ensuring water quality in the affected areaswith a detailed plan of sampling, methods and analysis, according to international scientific data, while the participants were informed about the results of already conducted samplings of previous days.

2. Guidelines were given for the collection and cremation/sanitary burial of dead animals to the competent Deputy Governors and employees of the Region, in order to immediately protect the population.

3. He was presented operational plan for entomological surveillanceso that potential threats in the affected areas can be dealt with in a timely manner.

4. Finally, the business plan was presented of the epidemiological surveillance of communicable diseases in the affected areas (eg gastroenteritis, leptospirosis, etc.) and it was decided to give additional instructions to the health authorities for a thorough clinical evaluation of cases of febrile gastroenteritis.

It is noted that the Public Health Coordinating Center meets on a daily basis with the participation of all involved agencies, so that the situation is immediately assessed, per affected area, and the necessary and targeted protection measures are taken based on its characteristics and needs.
