AUTh veterinary professor at SKAI for Alimos whale: She is transported to the deep to see if she will recover

by

A difficult battle for the salvation of a whale that came out in the shallows of the beach of Alimos, is being waged by scientists and divers since the morning. In fact, the rescuers gave her the symbolic name “Sotiris”.

“Sotiris” was recently taken to deeper waters by rescuers and volunteers in order for the experts to see if he will recover.

As he explained to SKAI the professor of veterinary AUTh, Natasa Komninou, recruited for its rescue, this species prefers deep waters up to 3000 meters.

“Efforts are being made to remove it from the shore because it is difficult for this species in shallow water,” he said, adding that he would be monitored by veterinarian rescue teams, the port and rescuers if the animal reappeared somewhere.

She noted that this is why it is not easy to transport and care offshore.

She pointed out that it seems a small response but her situation is difficult.

“We will do our best, give it some time and from there on we will monitor it systematically,” he said characteristically.

“At the moment it has been established that the animal suffers from severe leukopenia, severe dehydration, anemia and a serious injury to the lower jaw which may have made the animal difficult and led to the shallows. “She has been treated with liquid electrolytes and drugs and has been supported so far,” said a professor.

At the same time, he clarified that the issue of eruptions and groundings is a multifactorial issue. As he said, environmental factors are usually involved and these animals are also threatened by collisions with other ships, while he stressed that this species is very sensitive to noise pollution (eg from exercises by submarines).
