Saints Trofimos, Sabbatios and Dorymedon
All three were martyred under Heliodoros, king of Provo and governor of Antioch (278 AD).
In the 3rd century, during the reign of the emperor Probus, when Atticus ruled in Antioch, two Christians, named Trofimus and Sabbatios, prominent and distinguished citizens, came to this city.
They arrived at a time when a widespread pagan festival with sacrificial offerings to Apollo was underway at nearby Daphne in Antioch.
Heliodoros had done everything to ensure the participation of all citizens in the events. Someone noticed that Trofimus and Sabbatios were not taking part in the feast, and reported them to Heliodorus. Immediately the ruler ordered them to appear before the judge. Because they did not deny Christ, the ruler subjected them to horrible tortures, one after another. After beating Trophimus to a bloody pulp, he sent him to the ruler of Phrygia, Dionysius. He was an even more ruthless persecutor of Christians.
Later, Heliodorus took Sabbatios out of prison and interrogated him. To the tyrant’s question about the degree of his office, the Christian replied: “My office, my country, my glory and my wealth is Christ, the Son of God, who lives eternally and by His providence exists and the universe is maintained!’ For the brazenness of his confession they flogged him and tore his flesh with iron claws until his bare bones were exposed. After the horrible torture Sabbatios surrendered his spirit to God.
In Phrygia, the ruler Dionysius subjected Trofimus to new tortures and then locked him in prison, to be tortured for a long time with worse tortures. Then a prominent citizen and crypto-Christian, Dorymedon, came to the prison and took care of the martyr Trofimus. But the tyrant was informed of this, and subjected both to similar tortures. In the end he threw bait at the wild beasts, but they tamed and did not even touch them. Dorymedon called out to the hungry bear and tugged at its ears to provoke it, yet the wild bear became more and more tame. The tyrant’s final order was to behead the holy martyrs Trofimus and Dorymedon with swords. Thus their souls ascended to heaven, where they now reign.
