Recognizing the need for even more substantial support for female victims of violence and with the aim of the best possible accommodation conditions for them, their safety, as well as their psychological and social support, the Municipality of Athens operates the Hospitality Hostel for Female Victims of Violence in new upgraded facilities. The building in which the Guest House operates meets all the conditions for a safe stay, while ensuring the seamless provision and upgrading of services. In the new, modern space, women victims of violence are accommodated together with their children, receiving all the necessary support and care.

The Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, after his visit to the Guest House, he emphasized:

“The newly upgraded Hostel for Women Victims of Violence of the Municipality of Athens is a safe haven for every woman who needs to get back on her feet for herself and her children. Our concern, in this modern and welcoming space, is that women receive all the necessary care and support, so that they can be empowered and make the necessary new start in their lives. Until domestic violence can be eliminated, we will continue with projects and actions to practically be at the side of every woman who needs to heal her wounds”.

Care with specialized facilities

In the new space there are 25 rooms, in which there is the possibility of hosting women with their children. The Hostel provides women victims of gender-based violence and their children with safe accommodation, feeding, psychosocial support, work counseling and care by specialized staff – social workers, psychologists, educators and caregivers.

The structure has specially designed emergency reception and hospitality areas. This means that it can receive cases 24 hours a day even without the prescribed medical tests.

“The Shelter for Women Victims of Violence and their children, with its excellently upgraded facilities and services, is a practical and warm embrace of protection for those who need it most. It is now a structure worthy of the hospitality that we as the Municipality of Athens want and must provide. Today, we welcome the Mayor, Mr. Costas Bakoyannis, who from the first moment has placed high on the agenda of the Municipal Authority, ensuring equality and the fight against violence and stereotypes”, stressed the responsible Deputy Mayor for Politics of Equality, Combating Discrimination and Gender-Based Violence, Katerina Th. Katrivanou.

To his goals scientific staff of the Guest House, which operates under the supervision of the Vice-Mayor of Equality Policies, Combating Discrimination and Gender-Based Violence, is to empower the hosted women, so that they can create a new perspective in their lives, outside of the structure. Depending on the case, the accommodation can be extended beyond six months if deemed necessary, following the necessary procedures.

The structure facilitates access to legal counseling in collaboration with the Center for Combating Gender-Based Violence and Multiple Discrimination by referring to the Women’s Counseling Centers of the General Secretariat for Demographic and Family Policy and Gender Equality or other bodies (Court of First Instance of Athens, Center for Women’s Research and of Studies “Diotima” etc.).

Women are referred to the Hostel by the Center for Combating Gender-Based Violence and Multiple Discrimination of the Municipality of Athens, the Counseling Centers, the Community Centers and Social Services of the Municipalities, by the National Center for Social Solidarity (EKKA) and the SOS Line 15900.

It is noted that in in its ten years of operationthe Shelter for Women Victims of Violence has accommodated 370 people (185 women and 185 children).
