Earlier, the Sperchios began to overflow in the region of Frantzis and has subsided, for now, flooding a large area of agricultural land.
The Police closed the traffic on the road that leads from Lamia to Frantzis a while ago, while now people and machines are waiting for the developments. At two critical points, Sperchios is in a borderline situation. Residents in the village of Komma are ready to leave when the green light is given by the authorities.
“We are on full alert in Fthiotida in the hope that we will avoid the worst” underlined the regional governor who early in the morning participated in a meeting where the final decisions regarding the next moves for Fthiotida were made.
Lamia: Sperchios is on the border – Evacuation of the village of Komma is being prepared
The Sperchios River is now at a borderline level with the authorities, the Municipality of Lamia and the Region of Sterea considering the possibility of immediate evacuation of the village of Komma.
All of them are in the community office, constantly checking the levees, so that when they reach the limit level, they give the order to evacuate.
Several of the families of the village have already moved away, either staying in hotels provided by the municipality, or with their relatives, while there are residents who do not want to leave their homes, feeling safe that their residences have some height from the ground.
A little while ago, representatives of the Municipality and the Region warned the residents of the village to be ready, as the rain started again. At this time it is not only raining in the area of Lamia, but also in the whole of Western Fthiotida, as a consequence the waters that are expected to arrive, after a while, are many and no one is now sure if the river embankments will withstand.
Since the afternoon, the services of the Mainland Region have been trying to strengthen the embankment, at critical points, by pouring mining material that they transport in large trucks.
There are earthmoving machines in the area as well as personnel transport vans to help evacuate residents when it is deemed necessary to evacuate the village.
