Impressive are the images from the excercise “PARMENION – 23”. The exercise also included the scenario of intercepting aircraft codenamed Renegade and is expected to culminate on October 3 and 4 with various scenarios. In fact, on Monday we are expected to hear the war sirens shortly after 11.00 in the morning as part of this specific exercise.
In particular, on Thursday, September 28, 2023 and in the context of Exercise “PARMENION – 23”, the episode of a possible asymmetric threat from the air (RENEGADE), which does not comply with the prescribed Air Traffic Control procedures, nor its Flight Plan, and its actions, was examined tend to develop into an aerial threat against the country’s civil and military installations.
The purpose of the episode was, on the one hand, to familiarize and practice the personnel of the Armed Forces (ED) and civil bodies involved in dealing with an aircraft in a “RENEGADE” situation, on the other hand, to train on Command and Control (C2) procedures when dealing with asymmetric threats.
The implementation of the relevant plan was carried out by the National Operations Center (GETHA/ETHKEPICH) under the direction of the Chief of the GETHA General Konstantinos Floros, in the presence of the Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Angelos Houdeloudis, the Chief of General Staff Vice-Admiral Ioannis Drymousis PN, the Commander of the Special Warfare Command (DEP ) of the GETHA Vice-General Dimitrios Houpis, the GETHA Vice-Chief Vice-Admiral Francis Lelouda PN and the GEA Vice-Chief Vice Admiral (I) Antonios Panidis as the representative of the GEA Chief Vice-Admiral (I) Themistocles Bourolias.
The “RENEGADE” aircraft simulated an Air Force transport aircraft, which took off from Elefsina Air Base (112 AM). According to the incident scenario, he was out of contact with the competent Air Traffic Control authorities (loss of communication), interrupted the electronic identification signal (Identification Friend or Foe IFF) and was gradually deviating from the approved Flight Plan. This was followed by the immediate briefing of the Chief of Air Force Base as foreseen by the Chief of Tactical Aviation and the aircraft was classified as a suspect “RENEGADE”.
A takeoff order was given to 2 Surveillance F-16 aircraft from Souda (115 AM), while at the same time the track of the “RENEGADE” aircraft was monitored by the 2nd ACP of the Air Force (PA). The fighter jets identified and intercepted the “RENEGADE” aircraft, which, following their visual signals, moved to the “NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS” airport of Heraklion, which was indicated for landing.
